Video games can be THE WORST when it comes to fat hate… and woman hate in general…
My husband is in the know… he swears that this is because that the writers of these games are often isolated and male and have no idea what a real woman is like…
I hear you!!
One thing that helped me was asking myself the questions:
What do I want…
something crunchy?
soft?
hot?
cold?
and all the other descriptive words I can think of…
🙂
Charlotte, Yay!!! I’m so glad you like that idea. It’s definitely one of my fav things to do now and then. 😀
JR, did you know I’m a Simpson’s freak?? LOL One of my favorite Homer quotes is “mmmm… forbidden donut…” from the episode where he makes a deal with the devil so his head is turned into a donut, but he STILL cannot stop eating himself…. LOL
My turn! This is the first computer access I’ve had since morning. Sigh…. the old computer hubby fixed up for me also died. We’re back down to sharing one computer and hubby worked from home today thus needing the computer, but we can afford to get me a new one this minute. Maybe we’ll order it tonight.
I went to Bed, Bath & Beyond today… OMG… it was so fun! I love that store.
Do you remember that blog post a while ago, and I really really don’t remember by whom (aargh!) about lipservice? She talked about how her mother always paid lipservice to “your weight/size doesn’t matter” but never ate much herself in fear of becoming unattractive.
A few days ago, this story hit home for me. Not about FA, but about respect. Respect is an issue of mine, I’m very sensitive to condescending tones. And my mother said to me the other day that she made an effort to never belittle us when we were kids. She always called me her “big girl”, which in my native language doesn’t really imply anything fat, don’t worry. But that doesn’t mean she never belittled us. Oh god no. Lipservice…
Hi Nathreee,
Medicine isn’t my area of expertise, but public health is, and I think that knowing that fat people are at greater risk of death from something (if it’s not simply coincidence) is valuable for saving lives.
Here’s one doctor’s take on it, where he recommends that clinicians “be particularly aware of the increased risk of rapid decompensation in obese patients with flu-like symptoms – these patients may well warrant special attention and monitoring for early signs of deterioration.” http://www.drsharma.ca/obesity-a-risk-factor-for-h1n1-influenza-mortality.html
Personally, I would rather be treated early with effective measures if I’m at high risk than suffer the consequences. The H1N1-novel virus is impacting, so far, different groups than usual in terms of severe illness and death, but the overall numbers of cases and deaths aren’t enough to draw conclusions. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone claim that fat people are more likely to transmit the virus, just that at first glace, they appear to get sicker from it.
You know who is super awesome on this kinda stuff… Sandy at JunkFoodScience. A link to my blog is on her blog roll. Since my computer access has been a bit crappy lately (my new computer is coming Monday!!!!) due to broke down computers, I don’t know if she’s already taken on this particular issue. If she hasn’t… maybe we could request that she does.
The thing is… even if obesity does increase certain risk factors, the fact is that dieting is more likely to make someone fatter than thinner… thus exacerbating any potential risk. Also, there are risks no matter what size you are. There are special risks for being normal weighted and really thin and there are risks with all kinds of body shapes…. apple, pear, cone, stick… whatever…
To me, that there are special risks to do with any particular weight category doesn’t surprise me.
The Open Thread is seriously one of my favorite things about this blog. I just love people coming around and saying anything… it gives a great sense of community.
I’m back to say that I will have my new computer by Monday… maybe Friday, if we’re lucky. Hubby ordered me a lovely new laptop last night.
Until then, I hope you guys won’t mind some slowness on my part. Hubby and I are sharing one computer and as a computer geek and professional, he uses our one computer a lot – and rightly so for a multitude of reasons.
I cannot wait to get my laptop! I’m a little annoyed that it’s going to look exactly like hubby’s computer… but my hubby is awesome… he had the idea that I can decorate my new computer with stickers and stuff. I am totally going to Target today or tomorrow to get myself stickers to girlify my new computer. 😀 hehehehe… fun!!!
I’m going nuts today…went to see my GYN this week, and she pushed the weight loss issue. She told me to ‘keep a food diary’. I told her that I didn’t want to, because it would make me fixate on food. Her response? ‘But I would be a bad doctor if I didn’t mention your weight’.
I know that I am in the right, but the damage is done: even though I exercise for almost an hour a day, and most of the foods that I eat are organic/natural (my husband works for a natural/organic foods distributor, and we get some food for free), my doctor says that I am unhealthy. Because I weigh more than her little chart says that I should.
I’ve dealt with this before in the military. But in the civilian world? This crap is ridiculous.
My Sports Medicine doctor (Doctor of Orthopedics) mentioned it to me, but only in passing, because I do have knee and back problems (the injury happened when I was temporarily THIN). More weight on my knees is a bad thing, but if my set point is 220 lbs, it’s just something I’m gonna have to deal with.
I’m gonna start my search for a new doctor tomorrow.
I have PCOS, and my hormones are all out of whack, and I’m cranky, and I hate everybody right now. WAAAAHHHH!!!!!
hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs!!!!!!
Work is a booger today! Drama, drama, drama! Big boss gone and leaves the craziness to me!
Hubby doesn’t see the need for vacations! I’m ready to take one WITHOUT HIM!
Saturday they’re calling for mostly clear skies and 81 degreees! Woo hoo!
Been thinking about my childhood a lot lately. Miss my parents still, even though they’ve both been gone a few years.
Lunch? What do I want? Not sure…many choices.
Bianca, my hormones are going crazy too but mine’s just PMS. Hope you start feeling better soon!
I found another video game that makes a mockery of fat women!
Video games can be THE WORST when it comes to fat hate… and woman hate in general…
My husband is in the know… he swears that this is because that the writers of these games are often isolated and male and have no idea what a real woman is like…
This intuitive eating shit is harder that it sounds!
I have no trouble with saiety, its finding the happy foods that’s giving me trouble.
Also, I can’t believe its the middle of July already! Where did the time go! Remember when as kids summer seemed to go on FOREVER?
I hear you!!
One thing that helped me was asking myself the questions:

something crunchy?
soft?

🙂
Me? I started with a new blog today at http://jenpet.com/
Check it out, folks! Awesome music by awesome people is always a wonderful thing.
Bianca and Sassyblonde, I hope your hormones stop beating you up soonest.
*Rambles away*
My birthday is in 23 days! 🙂
I’m starting to think about how I want to celebrate. I need it to be something fun and cheap, since me and all my friends are students.
I personally love to celebrate with an outing to Chilli’s… they have LAVA CAKE. 😀
mmmmm lava cake /end channeling Homer
Oh, I love Chili’s! And I haven’t been there in forever! You just gave me a great idea, thanks!

So sorry about your computer troubles. Perhaps my insomnia-driven writing is helpful, then 🙂

Plus I found this article…

Anyone care to respond? I’m not very at home in medicine…
